Be Safe Be Seen Vest copy.webp

As part of Ulster County Government’s continued traffic safety efforts, County Executive Jen Metzger, in cooperation with the Ulster County Transportation Council and Ulster County Traffic Safety Board, are giving out 1,000 yellow reflective vests at different locations across the County — more than triple the number distributed last year. The vests will aid in pedestrian visibility and are available to the public free of charge as part of the County’s ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ initiative. The program was first launched in 2024, and the inventory of 300 vests was quickly depleted due to high demand.

For the full story about this program, click here: https://saugerties.ny.us/be-safe-be-seen

There are locations in various municipalities where the free vests are waiting to be picked up, including Town Hall (4 High Street) in Saugerties.

Algal Bloom Warnings

Algal Bloom.webpOctober 20, 2025 update from Riverkeeper: The harmful algal bloom in the Hudson River estuary appears to be dissipating. While recreational users should continue to exercise caution if they observe bright green patches or streaks, we have not observed these conditions recently, and other scientific data reinforce the conclusion that the bloom has cleared up.

For those interested in a more detailed communiqué from Riverkeeper about the reduced danger from this bloom, please click here or on the image on the left.

--------------------------

Original post: September 17, 2025: Today's Daily Freeman included an article about the algal blooms appearing along the Hudson River in towns including Beacon, Hudson, Hyde Park, Tivoli and Saugerties.  (The picture on the left is from the Esopus estuary into the Hudson River.)

The Riverkeeper organization has issued an alert email, to leaders in affected communities, and Supervisor Fred Costello's office has shared the email.  You can read about the recommended actions from Riverkeeper, by clicking here.

Generally, at this point, if you are near area waters and have any doubt about the safety of you or any of your pets making contact with the water, you are strongly advised to avoid contact.  The Riverkeeper article points out that this appears to be the most extensive HAB in the estuary in living memory.‌ ‍

"HABs can produce toxins that pose health risks to people, pets, and wildlife via ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. The most common symptoms that may occur from exposure include skin rashes or stomach upset. Exposure to high concentrations of the more potent and rare toxins can damage the liver or neurological system. Dogs that swim in waters affected by HABs have died.‌"

Be careful out there.‍  ‌ ‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌

Governor Kathy Hochul and the NYS DEC Declare 14-Day Burn Ban (Which Will Be Reevaluated and Possibly Extended)

DEC Wildfire Color Coding for NYS copy.webpA statewide burn ban is in effect due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban will be in effect for 14 days from October 2nd to October 15th and will be reevaluated prior to expiration. New Yorkers can help prevent fires in communities and in the back-country by complying with the prohibition on most outdoor fires and protect water supplies by continuing to conserve water whenever possible.

The statewide burn ban now in effect PROHIBITS the starting of outdoor fires for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as all uncontained fires, including campfires, and open fires used for cooking. Backyard fire pits and contained campfires less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width or diameter ARE ALLOWED, as are small, contained cooking fires. Burning garbage or leaves is already prohibited year-round in New York State and several municipalities have burn bans currently in effect.

Recent dry conditions are resulting in a “High” fire danger for the Southern Tier, Lake Ontario Plains, St. Lawrence, Adirondack, High Peaks and Upper Hudson Champlain Fire Danger Rating Areas. A high fire danger means all fine, dead fuels ignite readily and fires start easily from most causes, including unattended brush and campfires. The rest of the state remains in “Moderate” fire danger, which means fires can start from most accidental causes.

The high fire danger is due in part to gusty winds and lower relative humidities forecasted during an existing prolonged dry spell. Any notable rainfall from last week was not area-wide and while wind gusts are expected to calm down, dry conditions are expected to continue for at least another week.

Since the beginning of August, Forest Rangers have responded to 64 wild-land fires across the state. Fires may become serious and controlling them difficult unless attacked successfully while still small.

Note that in the color-coded image (larger version available here), Ulster County is in the "Moderate" range for fire danger.

We have posted a notification PDF that informs that we missed a deadline in some recently updated regulations requiring inventorying and reporting on over 1,500 water service lines in the Village of Saugerties.  This task hits hardest on small municipalities like us, versus larger cities and town.  In addition to the number of lines we deal with,  we have 125 years or so of records to inspect and factor into the work to satisfy the EPA.

We are confident we will complete the inventory/reporting tasks mentioned in the notification PDF, by the August 31, 2025 deadline that's mentioned therein.
