Description

The Board of Assessment Review (BAR) was established to guarantee taxpayer’s rights by hearing real property assessment complaints (also called grievances) and arriving at fair and impartial determinations regarding those grievances.

While the Board normally meets only 2 – 3 times a year, it has significant responsibility.  It reviews all applications for real estate tax grievances that have not been resolved by the town assessor prior to Grievance Day (the fourth Tuesday in May).  In addition to reviewing applications, members of the BAR meet with Saugerties residents who choose to come and present their applications to the Board in person. 

BAR members are required to attend a training class, which is held in Ulster County, and normally serve a five year term.
